Not to be confused with U4-E-AH! music or productions, which was my umbrella moniker for all my musical projects from the 80’s through the late 90’s – in 2003, U4-E-AH! became the actual name of my current band. Featuring, Gunars P. Lelis on Guitar, Gvon Brown on Bass, and Ira Craig on Drums, this instrumental power trio was a short-lived experiment in Afro-Celtic music. I named it so, because I was combining Modes that represented both Celtic and Middle Eastern melodies. (I thought I had invented the genre, but it turns out it has existed for quite some time.)
I called the album “First Impressions”, because these tracks were literally the result of us spontaneously playing together, unrehearsed, and recorded Live to an Akai/DPS24, which is a 24-track, digital, stand-alone, studio. This is basically what happens when you combine a Psychedelic guitarist with a Funk bassist, and add a Rock drummer. Besides playing at parties, we actually did play out at a local tavern one evening, and were offered a gig, if we got a Press Kit together. We were just having fun, so we posed for a tongue-in-cheek photo shoot, after we had released this album, but never followed through – and didn’t take it any further than that. After our “First Impressions”, we never recorded again – and by the early part of 2004, it was clear that we were each ultimately moving in different directions, and disbanded soon after.
Out of the 3 extended cuts that comprise this album, my favorite was “Resurrection of the Tunisian Druid”. A 22 minute cohesive Jam that deftly combined Dorian, Mixolydian, and Phrygian #3rd Modes, in a climactic frenzy. There’s not a bad note in the whole thing, and we were totally in the zone with each other at numerous times. (I recently made a video to accompany the soundtrack.)
